CBD & The Entourage Effect
Written for CBD Profiler by: Kendra Solow
As doctors, scientists, and researchers dig deeper into the fascinating nature of cannabis, we’re starting to realize its not purely cannabidiol that can take credit of all of its miraculous health benefits and it alone cannot provide your body with what has been named as the “Entourage Effect”.
Right now, most of us have our eyes set on CBD and what it brings to the table; however, we aren’t giving much credit to all that make this medicinal compound really stand out. It’s within cannabidiols synergistic nature to work together with all the other phytocannabinoids that this plant provides, allowing us to fully maximize the plants’ remedial uses.
With cannabis carrying over 113 cannabinoids and counting, many doctors (such as Dr. Jokūbas Žiburkus) speak about the entourage effect and how consuming cannabis in its rawest state, also known as cannabidiolic acid or CBD-A, can facilitate absorption of all these active ingredients.
Cannabis’s myirad of cannabinoids.
These cannabinoids are also accompanied by a wide variety of terpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, and even fatty acids such as omega 3, 6, and 9. With the synergist work of terpenes and cannabinoids, this is known as the entourage effect and it has been proven to be more effective than taking pure CBD alone.
In other words, if we consume cannabis in full spectrum form such as a high-grade CBD oil – juiced or raw in your favorite dinner dish– it’s a sure thing that you’re receiving the whole plant rather than just an isolated variable.
You could also compare this idea to gulping down a glass full of Airborne or Emergen-C, versus eating whole orange. With the Airborne or Emergen-C you only get the vitamin C whereas the fresh fruit as a whole delivers energy in the form of calories and fiber for your digestive system along with other beneficial vitamins and minerals. I think most of us would agree, consuming fruit naturally replicates the way nature intended us to fully, absorb vitamin-C.
Not convinced yet that the entourage effect is a real thing?
Paint this picture in your mind…
Imagine peeling open a freshly picked orange right off the tree while you have no capability of smelling or experiencing its robust flavor. That orange would become just a round, juicy “thing” that might be worth the calories when all said and done; however, when we’re able to enjoy that orange for all that it has to offer and we’re also intuned with all five of our innate, physiological senses– that’s where the magic happens.
Now we can fully be present to witness the smell of its sweet, citrusy rine and its wild, fresh flavor which brings that experience full circle; this is the beauty and simplicity behind the entourage effect.
Most cannabis-educated health professionals are now recommending full-spectrum CBD products, also know on as whole plant CBD, because they understand it’s the whole plant that makes CBD stand in the spotlight, not just CBD itself.
Could it really be that simple?
Give this perspective a try: next time you come across a delightful patch of flowers, stop and give them a sniff. Take in the environment, the colors, the smells, and everything your senses can provide.
This is an entourage effect we can all appreciate whether we’re using cannabidiol or just enjoying nature’s little beauties.
